Award-Winning Parent Resource Now FREE Online -- "Dr. Jon Malinowski and I have put the entire text of 'The Summer Camp Handbook' online," reports Dr. Chris Thurber, who is fast approaching his 30th summer at YMCA Camp Belknap. "After selling nearly 15,000 copies, the publisher gave us permission to post the unabridged text online," says Chris.
"Any camp that wants to make this material available to parents just needs to post a link to http://www.summercamphandbook.com on their site. The book, which has been featured on the Today Show, Martha Stewart, Fox News, and CNN, won a Parenting Press Gold Award in 2003. It contains the most complete camp preparation information of any single source.

GAMER'S! GAMER'S! GAMER'S!
Gamer's Camp Blog Post
Hey there everyone, Grandpa Steve here ready to share some exciting news from the world of Sherman Lake!
It's already time to think about summer, and, for me, that means the Sherman Lake Gamer's Camp! I know that some of you out tyere have no idea what I'm talking about, so I'll offer a little bit about the program. For those of you more familiar with Gamer's camp don't navigate away! There's some awesome info about a paragraph down that I think you'll want to see!
So what is Gamer's Camp? Gamer's Camp incorporates the character principles that Sherman Lake teaches into the field of customizable collectible games. We incorporate popular games - Pokemon, Heroclix, Pirates, among others - with traditional camp activities for your child to enjoy. Our focus is on the team atmosphere and gaming community, with a particular emphasis on sportsmanship and fair-play. As near as I can tell, Sherman Lake is the only camping program to have a program like this.
So who is Gamer's camp for? Well, at the moment Gamer's Camp is exclusivly a Resident Camp program. Additionally, you have to be 8 years old or older. Other than that, there are no requirements. We are open to new and Veteran players alike. New player's are provided with pieces to play with, several of which they get to take home with them! Campers that have their own pieces/cards are welcome to bring their own parts, and care is taken to make sure things are kept fair. Rulesets are explained using examples and questiins are welcome. Experienced players share in the responsibility of helping new players learn the rules and are an integral part of the experience. Each day brings either a new game or a new challenge to face. The experience continues forward through Friday where Camper's are offered the opportunity to participate in a parents imvitational where your camper gets a chance to show off their skills and you get a chance to share in the joy of gaming with your camper.
So what is going on new this year? Well read on to find out about the changes made to Gamers Camp and to find out about our new Gamer's Camp 2.0.
First up, let’s look at the original Gamer’s Camp: Based on the feedback we received regarding the original Gamer's Camp, there's been a few tweeks and changes to the program. We want the experience to be as fun and as exciting as the pilot year, but without quite as many glitches as last year. Check it out!
--Challenges are all new and progression based. Rather than trying to cram everyone through the same scenario at the same time, challenges are now scenario based and designed to test your skill and intuition when faced with a particular game situation. You’ll need to puzzle out the best maneuver in order to earn your victory and to move on to the next challenge. With multiple challenges available, more campers can participate at the challenges at the same time.
--Game Fix: All 'pre-genned' teams will use quick reference character cards. No more having to dig around for a rules sheet – your abilities are explained on the card and ready to be used, regardless of the game you are playing.
--Player Fix: Match-ups will use a randomized setting rather than pre-picked. Match-ups will take into account skill level and playability after the randomization and not before. You can play your friend that you bring with you, even if they are more experienced than you are.
--Measured progression: Your learning pace and curve determines how fast or complex you want to get into the action with! Feel like you aren’t understanding a mechanic? Confused about how to move your ship? What part’s the bow and what’s the hull? No problem; until you understand the core mechanic, you don’t have to move on! Be ready to learn, but not be overwhelmed!
--Gaming Fix: Bring your own game! With a full day to experiment and try out new games now built into the outline, be ready to share what not only is preplanned, but also what you think others will enjoy! (Make sure it’s Camp Appropriate first though!)
--Gaming Fix: We’re fixing Mods and sculpting. We’ll be using Polymer clay to Mod existing pieces rather than try and make our own. It’s simpler, much more fool-proof than plaster cast, and has way cooler results. Make sure and think of an idea for what you want to build!
And now what has me even more excited! Gamer’s Camp 2.0.
What is 2.0 all about and why is it necessary?
2.0 is a full on, weeklong celebration of the joy of camp and the joy of gaming. Think of it as Ultimate Gamer’s Camp (but that name was already taken, besides, 2.0 sounds so much cooler!) Because it builds of the skills and knowledge practiced in regular Gamer’s Camp, Gamer’s Camp itself is a pre-requisite – you have to have attended Gamer’s camp either last summer or in the session offered prior to 2.0’s week.
But what is it? It’s EVERYTHING related to our featured games: Heroclix and Pirates. We explore the full, in-depth strategies and limitations of both games. We add in Affiliation and Field effects to Pirates, while Heroclix moves away from the simpler Alpha ruleset to the standard Approved Play format, including the full Powers and Abilities Card, as well as Feats, Battlefield Conditions, and Team Abilities. After Gamer’s camp, you should be able to attend an approved-play venue without fear and be ready to participate in the gaming community as a whole.
I know, I know, that sounds kind of boring. Let’s look at the more exciting stuff. Check this out!
In Gamer’s Camp 2.0 relive your favorite comic book moments! Can the Avengers stop Dr. Doom and his Minions BEFORE he escapes with the loot from the bank? Recreate the Marvel Civil War or the time when Gotham Lost the Batman using Event Dials. Challenge the Anti-Monitor and his Pariah and, can you stop Colliossal Spectre from rampaging all over yours and your partners forces?
What about Davy jones and the Spanish fleet? Can he and his crew of be stopped in their conquest of the very seas? Can you devise a strategy that will prevent Calico Cat from making off with the Spanish dubloons and you with an empty hold? What about the brand new Catamaran and Steamships? Can you convince your Mercenary and Pirate crews to work together and hold down, literally, the Fort Tartuga? Find out in Gamer’s Camp 2.0!
We’re building up now! That all sounds well and good, but I know what you’re thinking. So what’s actually *NEW* this year in Gamer’s Camp 2.0. What’s NEW you say? I’ll tell you what’s NEW.
Lightsabers. Lots of ‘em.
Introducing our new Scenario: Role Playing games using Wizards of the Coast’s Star Wars Miniatures game, we’ll be experimenting with this brand new game type and coming up with all kinds of excitement. Sometimes the dice are your best friends, sometimes they are not; can you overcome your poor luck with your own ingenuity, skills and the teamwork abilities of your friends? Or will the Sith conquer the galaxy? As an excited story-teller, the Star Wars Mini section of 2.0 has me peaked.
Wait? That’s NOT enough? Does this sound enough like an infomercial yet? Check this out:
Also NEW: included in the cost of your Gamer’s Camp 2.0 session are two Booster packs from the latest Heroclix expansion. We’ll be holding the first ever Sherman Lake Gamer’s Approved Play Tournament. Using nothing more than the contents of those 2 sealed boosters, build a team and challenge your way to the top. Regardless of your success, the figures are yours to keep! This is a real sealed-play event; we’re not changing a thing from the approved play rule set.
You’re still wondering what’s NEW?
All right, here’s my final card for this round. Check it:
We’re scheduling Gamer’s Camp and Gamer’s Camp 2.0 to coincide with a Weekend Stay-over program weekend. If you sign up for Gamer’s Camp 1.0, Gamer’s Camp 2.0, AND the Weekend Stay Over, you’ll spend that at least part of that Saturday on a Gamer’s Camp weekend challenge offsite at Fanfare Sports and Entertainment. An all special event just for Gamer’s as well as first peek access at the Prize structure for week 2 (and maybe a limited event for a prize or two? Who knows?!). If we’re really lucky, we might even see Heather or Tim break out their Custom Clix for some play.
Wow….that’s a lot to read.
So, parent’s, camper’s, everyone – there’s only 6-ish months left until camp. We filled up pretty quickly last year, so my suggestion? Start calling in and reserving your slots before they fill (how else am I going to know how many prizes to buy anyway?) . Spaces are limited for THE most amazing two weeks you’ll EVER spend at camp.* A safe and exciting rest of the school year to you all. In the words of Stan Lee:
EXCELSIOR!

FALL IS HERE!!! THAT MEANS INTEGRATED EDUCATION SHERMAN LAKE STYLE!
Integrated Education
I hope this entry finds you all doing well and getting ready for another great summer of camps here at the Sherman Lake Y Camp. We have had a great fall with lots of campers coming from all over: Vicksburg, Marshall and Gull Lake Middle Schools started the season in a great fashion, Kalamazoo Country Day, Mattawan 8th Graders came for a day, Waylee, Woodland and Lake Center El. in Portage, Loy Norrix Freshman came out for a great week of teambuilding, and November has seen St. Phil out of Battle Creek, Black El. from Warren Delton Kellogg, Charlotte Middle and we will end our season with some Kalamazoo campers from Parkwood Upjohn and Milwood and last but not least will be Haverhill El. out of Portage. By the middle of December we will have served nearly 2200 campers this fall. That is 2200 HCRR Strong.
The end of our fall IE season means that it is time to get the brochure out, for this though we need your help. We need to figure out what theme days will fill our summer. Please take some time to think about who you may like to dress up as, or games that you might like to play. All you have to do is send your theme idea to Tim at tims@ymcasl.org with the subject line: theme days. This is open to Staff or campers; past, present or future. Make sure to get them to me by December 1. Then look for the brochure on your doorstep sometime in the early days of the New Year to see if your vote made it. Have a great New Year and I’ll see you when it is warm again. Or sooner...just look for more information about the camper overnight over Christmas Break. Peace Out Lake Trout.

Olivet College Interns Return to Sherman Lake
We are very excited about the Olivet student teachers that will be participating in our IE program this fall. During a week of training in late August they learned all about Sherman Lake YMCAs culture of caring, teambuilding and relationship building activities, as well as doing all of the fun activities that we all love. This unique partnership has been created so that when these wonderful new teachers have their own classrooms, they can teach their students how to use honesty, caring, respect and responsibility so that everyone in their classroom will feel valued!
Americorps *NCCC
Americorps *NCCC is a national service program composed of young adults that range in age from 18-24. Each individual is sent to one of the five campuses in Sacramento, California, Denver, Colorado, Vinton, Iowa, Vicksburg, Mississippi or Perrypoint, Maryland. From there each individual receives one month of training at their designated campus and is then placed into a team of ten to twelve corps members. From there, each team will have four rounds of projects in which they are sent out to a community, usually within their region, to address areas of educational, environmental, disaster relief and any unmet needs in that community. The team will stay together throughout all four projects until they complete 1700 hours of community service over their ten month term.

Summer Theme Days 3
Hey everybody- These last few weeks are going to be great. You’ll want to sign up for one of these if you haven’t yet. We are loading up for summer and have lots of great games and activities planned. Don’t hold back on costumes, the crazier the better! I am sure that your awesome counselors will be dressed even crazier. Just a few more weeks till camp starts...See ya then.
Week 7: Superman and Friends- This camp favorite has seen the likes of Batman, lots of Supermen and women, but the superhero that takes them all was Burp Man last summer. Be as creative as you would like, an old sheet makes a great cape, wear some underwear outside of your pants and give yourself a name…that is all you need. You can always fall back on the classic comic book or even dress as another type of hero. There have been some hero sightings on the Fridays of this week. It promises to be a great week.
Week 8: Pirates of Sherman Lake- Jack Sparrow has nothing on the true Pirates of Sherman Lake. Eye patches and parrots on the shoulder, a little bit of tin foil and you got a perfect hook. Toss a couple of Jolly Rogers on some shirts and you are one mean looking pirate. Oh yeah don’t forget about words like Scurvy, Ahoy, and of course ARGH! This is another camp favorite year after year. Captain Jack may just make an appearance.

Week 9: Sherman Lake Carnival/Spirit Day- The 14th Annual Sherman Lake Carnival is coming to town. You play all kinds of great carnival favorites, get great snacks, and enjoy the company of some great friends that you’ve made throughout the summer; this is the last week with Resident and Day camps together. “Spirit” means dress up with anything that you’d like to show your spirit...a favorite team or school. The four principle colors of Blue, Red, Yellow, and Green are great colors to think about...your campers will learn all about these.
Week 10: Animation Nation- Disney Day has been a long time favorite here at the Sherman Lake Y Camp, this year we are including anything that is animated. Come as your favorite cartoon; Dora or even Scooby Doo. We will play lots of great games and have trivia about all the great characters from the past and present. This is the last week of summer and is only Day Camp, so be sure to join in on the fun at the Most Wonderful Camp on Earth. This is a smaller week so sign up for this one even if it will make multiple weeks...it’ll be worth it. Things get a little crazy on the last week of camp.
Thanks for checking out the blog. Come join in at the Camper Open House and Summer Celebration on Friday, June 13th from 5:45pm-8pm. Camp will be open and all the summer staff will be out in full force. I Can’t wait to see you.

Summer Theme Days 2
Hey everyone, I hope that you are all signed up for camp...it seems that you are since most of our spots are filled. Be sure to get those registrations in quick. I can’t wait to see you all. Here are the next three weeks of Theme Days, Weeks 4-6. See last week’s blog for specifics on Theme Days. Basically what you need to know is that it is the best day of each and every week.
Week 4: Green Eggs and Ham- Get ready for a great time at Sherman Lake, bring your creativity because talking in rhyme will be very important. Whether you are The Grinch, a Lorax, Star Bellied Sneetch or a Sneetch without a Star upon thars, be sure to read up on the stories there will be quizzes and games all week for the most scrumptacular prizes on the beaches. Dr. Seuss would be proud of all the chaos we’ll be up to this brand new theme week. This is also the theme for our counselor’s whole summer. Oh the Places You’ll Go!!!!!
Week 5: Hey now you’re a Rock Star! - We will be holding Sherman Lake Idol all week for a final showing on Friday...everyone wins. Dress as your favorite rock star or become the rock star that you’ve always wanted to be. Couple rules for the beginning rocker. #1 Hair must be big. #2-- two words: Make-up!!! #3 Be creative. We are rolling out the red carpet for this brand new theme week. Pop Culture and Rockstar Quizzes and Games will make this week one for the ages...You might say Rock of Ages.
Week 6: Mario to Monopoly- This week’s theme is another newbie. Games and game characters is the idea. Whether you first started on the Nintendo or Xbox 360 or you prefer the good old fashioned board games they all are based around great characters. Its all about dressing up, like always leave the electronics at home. We may just make our own. If your character uses a weapon, they won’t need it for this level…leave it at home. Here is yet another new idea for a theme week from your wonderful staff. Lots of great cabin group games as well as all camp games will make this week...gametastic!!!!!
All three of these weeks are going to be great fun! I can’t wait to see you! If you have any questions please call or email anytime. 269-731-3007 or tims@ymcasl.org
Peace, Love and Y Camp
